Lenny's Defiance - Suite for Alto Sax and Piano

As I began to collaborate with Dr. Wenbo Yin on this piece, I became all too conscious about the current world that we live in. How do I reconcile myself to the incredible luxury of writing and performing music while the world around us is on fire, both figuratively and literally? Here I draw my inspiration from the great Leonard Bernstein, who, when facing the global violence and injustice around world, famously declared: ‘This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.’ Echoing Lenny, my response as an artist to this tumultuous world is this: we pray, we sing, …and we dance!!!
